Halloween just might be the best day of the year. You get to dress up in something crazy and have people give you candy for it. What could be more fun than that? The best part is that Halloween isn’t just for kids anymore. Every year, millions of adults dress up and head out to bars and parties to let loose. The opportunity to escape from your everyday identity and dress up however you want makes Halloween a favorite day – not only for kids, but also for those of us who are kids at heart.
Unique Costumes
Everyone is familiar with the classic Halloween costumes like the pirate, cowboy, princess, ghost and vampire. There’s nothing wrong with dressing up as one of these things, but you may as well just wear a big sign that says “CLICHÉ.” If you really want to impress people, you’ll need to dress up in a clever, quirky and original costume.
Can’t think of anything unique? Here are some ideas that can help you get the ball rolling:
Serial killer – Tape boxes of cereal and plastic knives all over your body.
Chick magnet – Tape Barbie dolls (or, alternately, baby chickens) all over your body.
Partly cloudy with a chance of showers – Wear a blue track suit with some cotton balls taped to it. Carry a spray bottle filled with water so that you can produce the “showers” on demand.
If you really can’t think of anything unique, try putting a new spin on one of the old classics. Go as a futuristic cowboy, a depressed pirate or the ghost of someone famous. Or, combine two classic costumes (green Frankenstein face paint + a gray Einstein wig = Frank Einstein).
Lazy Costumes
Here are a few ideas for people who want to dress up, but don’t want to exert much energy:
Buccaneer – Tape a dollar bill to each ear (get it? Buck-an-ear…)
Waste of time – Tape a watch to your belt. (Waist…)
Tourist – Put on a baseball cap and strap a camera around your neck.
Costume Safety
It’s important for children to be safe on Halloween. Although reports about people putting razorblades into candy have been greatly exaggerated, the fact is that Halloween can be a dangerous night. It’s dark out and often hard to see where you’re going (especially if you’re wearing a mask). This leads to potential danger when crossing the street.
Glow sticks are a great way to not only add some flair to your costume, but also to make yourself more visible to motorists. Simply tie a couple of glow sticks around your ankles or wrists and you’ll be visible for up to a few hundred yards.
